Today we want to touch on an interesting topic - THE PROFESSION OF A WAITER.
So, after scouring the Internet a little, we collected the most interesting things:
It's hard to believe, but the profession of "waiter" is one of the most ancient. Its history goes back about 6 thousand years. Of course, the first sources testifying to the age of the profession date back to Ancient Egypt. On the frescoes, images of the prototype of the waiter were found, who served the pharaohs and served them overseas dishes.
Waiters appeared on our lands only in the mid-19th century, along with European-style restaurants. Although it is worth noting that only one establishment bore the loud name “restaurant” and it was located in Moscow. It was the very famous "Slavic Bazaar". The waiters at the Slavic Bazaar had to look impeccable: a tailcoat, a white vest, gloves and a bow tie were required. Clean shaven and well trimmed.
In other drinking establishments, which were called taverns, guests were served by sex workers. These were peasants dressed in untucked white shirts with a silk belt and bowl-cut hair. Hid behind his belt was a “spatula” - a kind of notepad with compartments for money. (today we call it the A Bill check restaurant)
Statistics show that two categories of people work as waiters. The first are students or young people without specific work experience and education who view the profession as temporary. The second is professional waiters, for whom the choice of profession was conscious. Such people, most often, rise up the career ladder and become administrators, or even directors of cafes and restaurants.
