“Bread and water are Cossack food,” says a Ukrainian proverb. However, the Cossacks were far from living on bread and water.
The Cossacks ate 3 times a day and always prepared hot dishes. Among the favorite and most popular dishes were kulish, zagreb cakes, solomakha (fermented bread dough), teterya (soup made from bread flour), tyurya (powdered crackers, diluted with kvass and seasoned with hemp oil and salt), scherba (fish soup) , as well as hominy. And among the especially favorites were dumplings, kulish and potaptsi.
The Cossacks also strictly adhered to Christian fasts and did not eat food of animal origin for 189 days a year.
